Kyiv Around ALMA School: Maidan Nezalezhnosti

Here is the most recognizable place in Ukraine.

It has long been the center of the country's political life. However, until the end of the Xth century it used to be a bog! Only around XVIII century houses and a square were built here. It was then called "Khreshchatik Square".

The square became "Maidan Nezalezhnosti" (Independence Square) in 1990, not long before the Declaration of Independence of Ukraine in 1991.

Now the place is epically beautiful, full of recent history and very close (only 15 minutes by foot) to ALMA School — the best possible place to learn Ukrainian or Russian as foreign ;)
